Big Sky Mind
After years of fascination, I found myself drawn to a specific region of the United States where the land and the sky seemed infinite. So much so, that I decided to live there when an unplanned opportunity presented itself. At the time, I couldn't grasp exactly what this attraction was, but now I understand why there’s a place called Big Sky Country. The search to answer my attraction began with curiosity and an intention to gain clarity.
The vast expanse of sky greeted me everywhere I turned, stretching out endlessly in shades of blue. It resonated with a longing for expansiveness deep within me. The boundless sky mirrored what I sought within myself — to quiet the chaos of my restless mind and return to a simpler state. I was not aware it was a state of mind I was looking for until I experienced it.
During my time in Big Sky Country, my mind unknowingly dictated much of my life. It was separate from my true self, a realization that dawned as I became more aware of influences and who I truly am. I am thankful for listening to something that said to pay attention; something is infinite.
Just as the expansiveness of Big Sky Country embodies the vastness of the natural world, the concept of Big Sky Mind encompasses the vastness of our inner world and the limitless potential of our being. Like untamed animals, our minds often run wild with years of momentum, leaving us anxious and drained. Yet, just as skilled trainers gently guide, we too can learn to calm our minds and silence the constant chatter of our thoughts. This requires nurturing trust, practice, and patience, as well as listening inwardly and practicing self-compassion, recognizing that each of us has the power to soothe our minds.
Like clouds drifting across a vast sky, our thoughts come and go. Observing them with curiosity and gentle awareness rather than judgment or resistance, we can train our minds; it’s not a given, and cultivate compassion for ourselves and others. This process can help us cultivate a deeper connection with ourselves and find peace in the present moment.
Sitting quietly beneath the expansive sky, whether in nature or our mind, need not be daunting. Grounding ourselves in the rhythm of our breath, scanning our body for tension, and releasing it with each exhale can be a truly exhilarating experience. As thoughts arise, observe them without attachment, visualizing your mind as clear blue skies where thoughts drift like clouds. This gentle practice helps calm your mind and reconnect with your true nature. There is no need to label anything when you can just be.
In these moments of stillness and self-kindness, answers emerge, guiding us forward with confidence, even amidst discomfort. We may not always have all the answers, but we can find peace in knowing our direction is rooted in the peace of our Big Sky Mind.
